During the retention period, appointments are scheduled with less frequency than before. Retainers are worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the first six months, except while eating, brushing, flossing, participating in active sports or playing musical instruments. After the first six months, you should wear your retainer at nighttime until you and the orthodontist agree on a different schedule.

If retainers are discontinued, there may be changes in tooth position. The position, wear and fit of teeth generally changes throughout your life, with or without orthodontic treatment. Our goal in the retention phase of your treatment is to limit these changes to the natural process of accommodation while maintaining both a good functional and aesthetic result.

Retainer Care
Brushing your retainer with cool water and a little bit of liquid dish soap will keep it fresh. DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE! A few helpful tips to remember:

  • Never place your retainer in hot water, as it may become distorted and require replacement.
  • If a brush is not available after eating, rinse off your retainer and place it back in your mouth or in its case.
  • Do not put your retainer in a napkin or in your pocket.
  • Keep your retainer either in your mouth or in its case to avoid loss or breakage.
  • Keep your retainer away from pets. Dogs love to eat retainers!
If a retainer is lost or broken, please contact our office immediately to schedule an appointment to replace it. Your retainer is the most important way to protect the investment you have made in your orthodontic care.
